What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for satisfactory sexual activity.

It is a common and treatable condition and can affect men of different age groups.Occasional difficulty with erections may occur due to stress, tiredness, or anxiety, but persistent problems should be evaluated.

Common Causes of ED

  • Diabetes and high blood sugar

  • High blood pressure and heart disease

  • High cholesterol and obesity

  • Smoking, tobacco and excessive alcohol

  • Hormonal problems, including low testosterone

  • Certain medications

  • Stress, anxiety, depression and relationship concerns

  • Nerve or blood-vessel problems

  • Previous pelvic surgery or injury

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Difficulty getting an erection

  • Difficulty maintaining an erection

  • Reduced firmness of erections

  • Reduced sexual confidence

  • Decreased sexual satisfaction

  • Persistent or worsening symptoms

Why Should ED Not Be Ignored?

ED may sometimes be an early sign of underlying cardiovascular or metabolic problems.

Seeking medical advice can help identify and manage the underlying cause.

Early evaluation can improve both sexual health and overall wellbeing.

How is ED Diagnosed?

  • Detailed medical and sexual history

  • Physical examination

  • Blood pressure and general health assessment

  • Blood tests when required, including blood sugar and hormone evaluation

  • Additional tests may be advised depending on the suspected cause

Treatment Options

  • Lifestyle changes and regular physical activity

  • Weight management and a balanced diet

  • Better control of diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol

  • Quitting smoking and limiting alcohol

  • Counselling for anxiety or psychological factors

  • Prescription medicines when appropriate

  • Treatment of hormonal or other underlying conditions

  • Vacuum erection devices or other therapies in selected cases

  • Penile implants or other surgical options may be considered when other treatments are unsuccessful

Take the First Step

ED is not something to feel embarrassed about.

Avoid self-medication, particularly medicines purchased without proper medical advice.

A urologist can determine the underlying cause and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

With proper evaluation and treatment, many men can achieve significant improvement in sexual function and quality of life.
