World Breastfeeding Week 2026: Supporting Mothers, Strengthening Families

Every year, World Breastfeeding Week is observed from 1–7 August to raise awareness about breastfeeding and the support mothers need during this important stage of motherhood. The 2026 campaign continues the global effort to create environments where mothers can make informed infant-feeding decisions and receive appropriate support from families, healthcare professionals, workplaces, and communities.

At Care N Cure Nursing Home, Jammu, we believe breastfeeding support should begin during pregnancy and continue after delivery, especially during the first few days when mothers and newborns are adapting to one another.

Why Is Breastfeeding Important?

Breast milk provides nutrition specifically suited to a baby's early growth and development. It contains essential nutrients as well as antibodies and other protective components that help support the baby's developing immune system.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends initiating breastfeeding within the first hour after birth and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. After six months, appropriate complementary foods can be introduced while breastfeeding continues up to two years of age or beyond.

Breastfeeding may also provide important benefits for mothers. However, every mother and baby is different, and feeding decisions should be supported with appropriate medical guidance rather than pressure or judgement.

The First Days Can Be Challenging

Although breastfeeding is natural, it does not always come naturally or easily.

New mothers may experience difficulties such as improper positioning or attachment, nipple pain, breast engorgement, concerns about milk supply, or uncertainty about whether their baby is feeding adequately. Babies may also occasionally have medical or feeding-related difficulties requiring professional assessment.

Timely guidance can often help identify problems early and make breastfeeding more comfortable and effective.

Support Makes a Difference

Breastfeeding should not be viewed as the mother's responsibility alone. Partners and family members can help by providing emotional support, ensuring adequate rest and nutrition, assisting with household responsibilities, and encouraging mothers during difficult periods.

Healthcare professionals also have an important role in providing evidence-based information and helping families recognise situations where additional assessment is needed.

Workplaces and communities can contribute by creating supportive environments where mothers have sufficient time, privacy, and appropriate facilities to breastfeed or express milk.

Supporting Mothers at Care N Cure Nursing Home

At Care N Cure Nursing Home, Jammu, our maternity, paediatric and newborn-care teams aim to support mothers and babies throughout pregnancy, delivery and the postnatal period.

During World Breastfeeding Week 2026, we encourage families to talk openly about breastfeeding, seek professional guidance when difficulties arise, and most importantly, support new mothers with patience and understanding.

A healthy beginning is built not only through good medical care but also through an environment in which mothers feel informed, respected and supported.
